Sister Corita

Sister Corita

posted as influence by eric on 01.13.09

I'm a little late on this, unfortunately, but Aaron Rose of Beautiful Losers fame curated a handful of shows last year that featured the famed designer Sister Corita. They were killer shows and this youtube short gives rose's perspective on the show and some german guy talking. it's very cool.

"Corita Kent was an artist, teacher, philosopher, political activist, and possibly one of the most innovative and unusual pop artists of the 1960’s. However, what is perhaps even more incredible is that she was a catholic nun." She's definitely got some great work out there and it's worth digging through google to find her images. You can also check her out in the book Come Alive! The Spirited Art of Sister Corita.

this is the future. nicholas feltron combines personal stats, a sense of humor and obsessive compulsion to great effect with his annual reports. can't wait to check out 2008.

I came across this picture of the artist Andrei Prychodko and his wife Amanda Bayard (who is also an artist) with the famous photgrapher/gallery owner Paul Facchetti. Facchetti was the first European exhibitor of Prychodko, whose work is multi-layered and often dreamlike with a masterful linework that is simultaneously modern in its abstraction, but as familiar as eastern orthodox art from the middle ages.

I was lucky enough to have gotten to study under both Andrei and Amanda for the better part of a year while they were living here in Charlotte. They were great teachers, pointing out my extensive bad habits and encouraging me in newer, better ones. It was a really good year and i wished that it could have been longer, more full. But I'm glad that I got the opportunity, I learned so much. My favorite quote: "Perfectionism is a counterfeit of excellence."

"This Modern Love" acoustic

Our good friend Blake passed this vimeo on, and I thought it was worth sharing. I love Bloc Party; they write great songs and they put on an amazing live show. This, although scaled back a bit, is no exception. I also love the way it's shot; it feels so spur of the moment (because it was) and personal. It's a high quality vid that's well worth the extra loading time -- I took it to full screen on my 24" monitor and it looked great. Enjoy!

Album art for "The DJ Knows"

posted as influence by David on 10.12.08

I'm so impressed by the time and effort that went into this album art project. The concept is great, but what really makes it a quality piece of design to me is the authenticity. Sure, designer Simon Bent could've just combined buildings and cassette tape in Photoshop, but instead he constructed a city out of cardboard stencils by hand, and actually shot the tape and city set up. The results of his hard work speak for themselves.
